Yearning Yellows

Yellow denotes energy, intellect and awakening of new blooms in the spring season. The sunny yellow gulal looks beautiful on black and blue faces and presents quite a contrast to the multi-hued faces.

  • Mix two teaspoons of turmeric powder (haldi) with four teaspoons of gram flour (besan) and use it as yellow gulal. Both of these are extremely good for skin. One can also use 'kasturi' haldi, which is more fragrant and has enhanced therapeutic effects.
  • Dry the petals of flowers like Amaltas, marigold or yellow chrysanthemums and grind them to yield different shades of yellow color powder. They can be used separately or can be mixed with gram flour to add bulk to the powder.
  • Boil one teaspoon of haldi in two liters of water to yield deep yellow color. Dilute to the desired color strength.
  • Soak 50 marigold flowers in 2 liters of water and boil it to get yellow Holi color solution. Leave it overnight for deeper shade.
